Valencia’s first pole position is taken by Ferrari’s Felipe Massa after a superb final run in Q3. He pushed McLaren’s Hamilton down to P2 despite the good run Hamilton put in.
In Q1, the surprise came from Toro Rosso’s Sebastian Vettel. After a brillant practice session yesterday, he impressed everyone by posting the second quickest time in Q1 and the quickest in Q2. This is definitely his best GP qualifying to date. However in Q3, he had to settle for sixth position behind McLaren’s Kovalainen in P5. P4 was taken by Ferrari’s Raikkonen, who still seemed to be struggling to put in good times in qualifying unlike his teammate. BMW’s Kubica will start in P3 tomorrow.
The Spanish fans are huge supporters of Renault’s Fernando Alonso, their country’s F1 driver. Everytime he drove by, fans would stand up to do the Spanish wave. It’s great to see such enthusiasim in Spain. However, Alonso could not post a good time in Q2 and has to settle for P12 tomorrow.
No major incidents happened today during the qualifying sessions despite slight rain falling over the circuit during Q2 and Q3. However, many predict that the safety car would be deployed at least once around this fast but tricky circuit tomorrow.
